Bronze Pour Print

I have spent most of my life working days in a bronze art foundry. I painted this depiction (showing myself and 2 of my colleagues) of a modern molten bronze pour of the type and scale we generally perform. The highly contrasted light and shadow illustrate the intense extremes of brightness and heat present during the pour. The machinery and safety equipment are intentionally represented as bold, colorful and overpowering elements in the work. This is meant to reflect the essential function they play, but also show that suiting up and performing this dangerous and arduous work, with very heavy, hot objects and sensitive, powerful equipment, transports the workers into a different reality for a time. The everyday stimuli, responsibilities and stresses we all experience are obliterated from thought and view during the pour, and all the energy and focus are directed at the single task of executing the process safely and successfully. The mood also reflects the risk of not just physical injury to the participants, but of loss of the ceramic moulds being cast if there is any problem during the pour. If a mould breaks or another problem arises, many days or weeks of work could be lost in the blink of an eye and at great expense. This renders the pour essentially a big crap shoot in the midst of the costly, trying process of producing art castings.
