About The Artwork

One of the most beautiful and peaceful places I’ve ever been, the Byodo-In Temple sits right below the mysterious other-worldly Ko’olau mountains on the island of Oahu. Year-round residents include finches, doves, and other songbirds who will eat seed right out of your hand, and a herd of very fat & happy Koi. It was a beautiful place to spend a quiet afternoon with friends as the mist moved across the mountains.

I am fascinated with place. I love how we are transformed by moving through place, how a simple morning walk fills us with sensory information, sounds and scents, the way the light is hitting a particular rock or building, the feel of air on skin. The unique character of each different environment lies in this sensory information. With each step place becomes part of us as we become part of it. I am a landscape artist living in Kailua-Kona Hawaii. My work is about ephemeral moments, utilizing moments in time at specific locations to convey emotional content. Growing up on a farm in northern Colorado gave me a unique perspective on scale in landscape. Colorado has very dramatic landscapes, and is a place of ever-shifting light. Since then I’ve lived in Berlin, Minnesota, spent half a year in Chicago, and several years on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State, each of which offered very different and amazing inspirations. Oils are my preferred media as they layer so beautifully allowing me to convey the sense of light in a work. Part of my studio practice includes drawing daily. I also paint with pastels and watercolor, but oils are my go-to media.
