About The Artwork

Near the Castle of the Stone there is the Bridge of Zan that the legend says was built by the devil in exchange for the first soul that would have passed to completed work. This constituted a problem for the inhabitants of the place, because no one would have passed it and the bridge would have been so useless. But Zan came in, a diminutive in the Genoese dialect of Giovanni, a village with a crafty character who managed to deceive the devil. Unfortunately, the gesture was not entirely positive, since he also deceived his best friend, his faithful dog. In fact, he rolled a small form of cheese making it follow his faithful animal. Zan bridge The furious devil, in revenge, followed Zan secretly trying to hit him at the right moment. He who became a hero to the point of attributing his name to the bridge, had fame and success and decided to bury his treasure right near "his bridge". At this point the devil, convinced that he would return to take it back, threw a curse on it, whoever tried to unearth the treasure chest would inevitably be overwhelmed by frightful landslides. In the years to come it was decided to build a church at that point, to drive away the demonic presence tied to the bridge. The parish priest previously poured holy water on the ground, making the sign of the cross, the treasure was recovered and nothing happened to any of the participants, the curse had vanished. Castle of the Stone Historical data tell us instead that the bridge was built by Giovanni (called Zan) Malaspina, son of Opizzone della Pietra, lord of the Castello della Pietra in Vobbia. The Bridge built by the devil creates a splendid setting at the Castle of the Stone also from the anomalous structure, almost as if it were created by the same supernatural forces and not by man, because here rock and building merge into one body, disturbing, anomalous, and therefore extremely fascinating.
