About The Artwork

Number 4 from a series of 4 small figure studies inspired by Monet's Rouen cathedral series in which the subject was painted in different lighting situations. The painting is of my muse 'Smudge' at her home in Brighton. I've been working with her for nearly 2 and a half years and in fact can not envisage working with any other muse for the foreseeable future. They are quick palette knife paintings done using only process colours - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black and White.

Req is a true British 'old school' graffiti artist that has transcended the street styles in order to make unique exhibitable artwork. He started using spray paint in 1984 and has developed a fine art style that he refers to as 'Spray-paint Realism'. His current work is of a Romantic semi Impressionistic kind in which he celebrates the beauty of women via his Muse - HH in oil paint, spraypaint ink, graphite or pastel. Req is also known for his painting work for Mo-wax recordings in the mid 90s and his own music career with Skint records and Warp records. Req regularly shows his work at Art of Treason, Brighton and Wish-less gallery, Tokyo. "My concept is that Art should be always beautiful." "It is the folly of artists to want to shock the viewer in order to make some significance in work. It indicates a lack of real understanding of the meaning of human experience. The uplift of the spirit is the highest goal." "Since the dissolution of religion in my country (England) it seems necessary to fill the desire of the human heart by making adorational images of the divine, making new pictures of the female human as Holy or on the path to overcoming her troubles. My idea of femininity is of the Exalted female. My ancestors knew about this but it was eclipsed by some Christian ideas." "If the work of an artist is meant to be bought then it ought to be adored." "It is my idea that artists should only produce works of beauty. Is it so strange?" - Req www.req1.co.uk www.facebook.com/req.artist https://www.instagram.com/reqimage/ https://www.behance.net/req-smudge
