Encaustic painting is an ancient form - 5000 years ago boat buiIders coated their boats with wax to waterproof them. I imagine some of the heated wax dripped onto the ground where various minerals created colors. Decorative wax led to encaustic paintings. I use an electric skillet to warm my pots of colored wax, and pour or paint or drip the colors onto my surface. Some of these drips end up on the skillet, and when my work is done and the skillet is cooling I place heavy paper facedown on the skillet and press, creating what I call an encaustic monotype. This one is matted on paper and framed in wood. I enjoyed the serendipity of the process and hope the viewer will enjoy the result.

Marsha Heller works in many mediums, including oil, acrylic, pastel and encaustic. No matter which one she is using on a particular painting, they are colorful, semi-abstract impressions of nature wherever she might be, even in her mind!
