About The Artwork

*Dimensions listed include frame* The premise behind this piece is an examination of the role that excesses in wealth and technology play as symbols of power. Everything in this piece suggests power, wealth and even divinity. This latter point in particular is communicated though the papal/ saintly hand position and halo common in Christian art, and the presence of extra limbs, a feature of divinity in a number of Asian religions. This is compounded by overly extravagant gold apparel and the extraneous (and ultimately pointless) nature of the hi-tech prosthetic limbs. Even the inlaid Japanese text on the harness reads ‘Titan’ as if to labour the point of the adornments. Dripping with gold and technology and hidden behind a grimacing warrior’s mask, the figure looks imposing initially. On closer examination however, it is worth noticing the subject himself looks pale and physically unimpressive. In this way the over-reliance on wealth and possession of technology common in many cultures can be seen as a fundamentally flawed pursuit, serving only as a distraction from whatever may lie beneath it all.

Largely lacking formal training as an Artist, Huck has spent years studying the principles of visual art as well as learning techniques from other Artists that inspire him. This freedom has allowed him to readily adopt tried and tested methods, as well as find which principles he would deviate from to develop his craft and style. The purpose behind Huck’s work is to explore and challenge archetypes (like the Hero or the Maiden) that are shared among different cultures regardless of barriers like geography or ideology. He is especially inspired by how these cultural or mythological images can be worked to transcend boundaries between viewers. Huck focuses on specific aspects of these common archetypes, such as the nature of masculinity as found in a hero/ warrior figure. His work often takes aim at these traditions, whether through humour or by darker means. In terms of style, Huck is drawn to figurative realism and symbolism. True representation of nature has not been emulated in his work however, as he has come to favour more of a loose approach in technique, often using impasto alongside glazes, as well as indulging in exaggeration of colour and shadow in much of his work.
