Chair Study Print

I painted this piece my senior year of college in advanced painting. We had a live model during our 4 hour painting class who sat in this chair. I would stay after to paint the chair itself. I was looking at VanGogh's chair paintings and impressionist style, use of colors to outline edges. I became interested in the concept of the chair itself, making it a subject, like an overlooked common thing we are surrounded by and use but don't pay much attention to. There is something vacant about it, the functional purpose, and negative space or vessel aspect for what it holds. The personality of this old, worn chair became apparent to me. It was also a practice in still life study, using color to define light, shape, and line. I continued to make paintings of chairs in years to follow, fascinated by their characters, history, and styles.
