About The Artwork
This scene from Madrid featuring the Metropolis building is a perennial favourite of photographers, painters and other visual artists. It is easy to see why: the building at the corner of the Calle de Alcalá and Gran Vía inaugurated in 1911, designed by Jules and Raymond Février for the insurance company La Unión y el Fénix, boasts a French Beaux-Arts style that was unusual for its time and remains striking today. This watercolour painting features the building and its surrounds at night, when the hustle and bustle of the teeming metropolis [no pun intended] takes on that peculiar glow only a serendipitous cooperation between natural and artificial lighting can create.

As an artist I'm interested in classical style as well as modern technique. Specifically, I'm interested in using the visual idioms of classical style, with their emphasis on accuracy, perspective, and proportionality, in the service of creating representational art that conveys more than a photograph can. While I work with pastels, pencils, and acrylics too, I am partial to watercolours.
