About The Artwork

When I go swimming in the ocean, I don't like to touch the bottom. I am afraid of stepping on crabs, skates and shells with creepy crawly things. "Clawdia" is 36" x 48" and she is the size of a crab I think of when I am in the ocean. She is what I imagine her to be in the water: beautiful white teeth in her claws, long feelers and hundreds tiny hairs on her legs.

After teaching art for 32 years, I can finally create my own art. No more student examples. So I started out making clay masks and progressed to ceramic sculptures that were busts of women depicting the trials of life. In December, 2013, my hands were hurting and I couldn't seem to get them to stop from throbbing after working with the clay all day. In January, 2014, my right thumb "caught" in the down position. The doctor called it trigger finger and I had an outpatient procedure to make my thumb as good as new. The hang up was, I would have to have double carpal tunnel if I continued to work with the clay and any medium that taxed my hands. My task was to find a medium in which I could create, love, and would last from now till the end of my life. I took a Gestural Acrylic class at the Foosner Art Museum in Eau Gallie, Florida. I was inspired to paint and I have been painting since. I often visit the beach and now my paintings will bring a little bit of the ocean home to rest on the wall in a painting. I hope that you enjoy them!
