Branscombe is a small village in East Devon. Between Branscombe and Beer is a delightful coastal path that forms part of the South West Coast Path. The upper route of the path takes you along Hooken Cliff top with spectacular views of the Jurassic Coast. The famous Hooken Landslip of 1790 resulted in a dramatic landscape of broken chalk outcrops and steep cliff faces. The area is rich in hardy flora and fauna. The steepness of the cliffs dictate that for a large part of the journey the cliff edge is fenced off. This view is from one of the highest points looking west. Strong coastal winds bend trees and bushes away from the sea and cloudy skies are common. On the day the painting was made the wind was strong from the south, plants were swaying in the wind and white cloud slid speedily across the sky. Occasional walkers bent themselves to cope with the conditions. I used acrylics to paint this picture because of their fast-drying properties and vivid colours. I have attempted to capture the feel of the windy cold day with rapid brush and palette knife work. Loose and free application of paint hints at the ever moving experience from the cliff top. Harsh white light throws rocks and trees into sharp contrasts. The small figure hunched against the cold wind was one of the few hardy souls tempted out on an unpleasant day. He is dwarfed by the huge cliff formation.

My work is primarily figurative – landscapes, portraits and narrative paintings in oil, acrylic and gouache. I never tire of the challenge of rendering a subject in a ‘realistic’ manner whilst at the same time weaving in a story, mood and personality to the piece. In the more narrative compositions, I have attempted to invite the viewer to construct the ‘story’ in their own minds from the content of the picture. My portraits seek by use of pose, composition, colour and tone to give an understanding of the subject’s character beyond the physical likeness. In my landscapes I like to convey the atmosphere and mood of the environment, so the viewer ‘feels’ as much as ‘views’. I work in my garden studio in Kingston on Thames, and my work can be viewed at ricksmithart.webnode.com
