"Cold War" took more time in reference than putting brush to canvas. My mother had been a missionary in Alaska during the early 1950's. She had a lot of stories with photos documenting her "Frontier" mission field. Globally this was a scary time. The Cold War was ramping up at a blistering pace. Russia was just a few miles away from Alaska. The U.S.A. built bases and filled them with military from the lower 48. The first scale casualties of the Cold War turned out to be Alaskan natives scattered in small people groups that dotted the massive territory of Alaska. Men from the lower 48 brought a virus that was completely foreign to an isolated people group. Tuberculosis. It quickly turned into an epidemic with unknown numbers of undocumented deaths. The United States military, realized the cause and took action by air lifting hundreds to military hospitals. This was the first time military hospitals were opened to large civilian populations. This painting captures a U.S. government official, a father carrying his sick daughter, and oblivious lower 48 travelers. There is a shadow figure leaning against the wall watching and judging the Cold War unfold. Oil on stretched canvas. Signed oil painting. Edges are not painted. The work may be hung straight out of the box. However as the artist, I would strongly recommend a frame. A realistic work of a somber, classical nature would expect to be framed. - standard size. If a frame is desired, this work will fit a standard open back frame. Quality inexpensive frames can be found at Dick Blick. http://www.dickblick.com/products/blick-simplon-plein-air-frames/

Art and creativity has always been part of who I am, but I only really started to focus on painting full time at the age of 50, following a long and successful career in advertising. As an artist, I love working in many different styles and exploring a wide range of subject matters. The beauty of online galleries lies in their eclectic art collections, and without the pressure of brick and mortar galleries dictating what I paint, I am free to paint whatever inspires me. Painting for me is an experience of falling headlong into inspiration. An image I come across will stick in my head and refuse to leave until it finds its way onto the canvas. My work is visually diverse, and there are very few painting styles that don’t inspire me in someway or another. My paintings range from abstract and cubist, to impressionistic and realistic. Most recently, I’ve been inspired by quirky and retro TV shows to tell a story through my paintings. The lighting and cinematography of these shows inspire me to paint dramatic moments in time, and I create unique, intriguing characters that are open to interpretation.
