About The Artwork

The Nuu-chah-nulth, also formerly referred to as the Nootka, are one of the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast of Canada. The term 'Nuu-chah-nulth' is used to describe fifteen separate but related nations, such as the Nuchatlaht First Nation, whose traditional home is on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The story of ‘Copperwoman’ is inspired by the traditional indigenous legends. It is a story of evolution, re-told by Ann Cameron in her book ‘Daughters of Copperwoman.’ In this painting, Copperwoman has emerged as the guardian of the land. She cares for her young one with a strength and calm that is without challenge. I have used simplistic shapes to indicate the birth of a landscape, filled with growth and beauty. A golden aura surrounds the body of Copperwoman, a Goddess of creation. This Series of paintings ‘Women of Myth & Legend’ is a celebration of all aspects of women and the female energy of the Universe. I have given each of the women a Mythical name, in one or two cases it is the name of a traditionally recognized Goddess, and in some I have created a name especially for her. I feel that contemporary society has forgotten the spiritual role model that is separate from, and not associated with, formal religion. These myths, which used to be the foundation of our lives, have been overtaken by digital reality and the icons are now mortal and fallible, glitzy creations of the media. When they fall from grace, our spiritual lives are depleted. I invite you to view these new images in the spirit in which they were created: a celebration of a story that is our own.

I live and work as a professional artist in Victoria BC, Canada. My paintings are large, expressive canvases - dynamic figurative art revealing energy systems within the human form and our environment. With a full time studio at Xchanges Gallery & Studios, I paint on a daily basis and facilitate Life Drawing sessions at Xchanges throughout the year. Having been part of Galleries and Studio-Galleries during my career as an artist, I am now selling my art direct to collectors, through Saatchi Art online and from my studio. I have a regular art Newsletter to keep my clients and customers in touch with my latest work. Artist Statement The inspiration for my artwork comes from the seen and unseen energies that connect the universe. I perceive the vital streams within the human body, through understanding the meridians of Chinese Medicine. My fascination with optics, the study of sight and the behavior of light teaches me how science observes the human body at a molecular level. Using transparency and movement, I paint this alternate view of reality, where instead of forms and object governing my vision, the energetic world is in focus. When I paint I use bold strokes to show where weight and movement create dynamism, and use ribbons of bright colour to indicate the streams of energy. My latest series of paintings are concerned with connection and interaction between people, groups of friends and individuals. The dynamic relationship with the land that we stand on and the atmosphere around us are woven into the mix. Often I paint the close and harmonious relationship in which the people or groups can understand each other's feelings or ideas. Quantum physics and science inform my work, and allow me to experience a new vision, a different way of viewing the world. Stepping aside from what the camera sees, I strive to interpret my experience in a holistic style, informed by the spirit and movement of a scene. All my paintings are referenced from drawings in willow charcoal and pastel. I find these materials give the strength of line and delicacy that I need. From these initial sketches the composition emerges and has the benefit of immediacy. This acts as a springboard to inspiration. Each line or brush stroke tells a story, and I’m aware that the energy behind a line can be perceived on the canvas. Where the lines of energy flow in a landscape or a human body, they give information to the eye that we interpret, each in our own way.
