My Storm Project Experiment ~ consists of a series of 140 watercolours The inspiration behind this series of 140 Watercolours; is the scientific research into the possibility of harnessing energy from lightning as a future sustainable source of energy. There are very few scientists in the world researching this, but there are some, both in California and Europe. I also wanted to explore the sense of drama and power of living in a rural environment as opposed to city dwelling. This way of living, and being connected to nature and the weather, seems to me to be more necessary and relevant than ever with the current climate emergency. We need to feel connected with and attuned to our natural environment, and re-integrate a sense of awe and respect for the climate, weather, and its power. I began this project in 2015, so far it consists of a first series of 140 watercolours, and will expand in the future to include oil paintings and sculptures. The series was conceived intentionally with the idea of creating a large enough body of work, with a experimental approach, so that it took on its own energy and momentum, and I believe I’ve achieved that. The later paintings in the series were made in four processes; draw the lightning in masking fluid, paint background, dry, lift masking fluid, paint land, dry, paint into masked out areas of lightning or not, depending on which image is currently being viewed.
