About The Artwork

This contemporary piece of art centers around gender uncertainty and alteration. The certainty of gender has been a problem faced by some around the world. Although some have accepted to alter theirs and are comfortable with it. Statistics show this characteristic is dominant within Africa. This is described by the use of same clothing colors in opposite diagonal (cross) direction in the scenic interplay of the painting, with hands crossed downward-backward and upward-forward respectively. The use of emoji's in my works is a surrealistic and mannerist style of art that describes human relationships and everyday interactions where there is an active and a passive individual in a dialogue. It was developed with a purpose of defining human expressions as simply as possible. In the present world, there are use of emoji's in conversations, nowadays you find people using just emoji's to communicate and express feelings. There is almost an emoji for every kind of expression. The red circle with a red slash symbol on their clothes indicates a prohibition. It shows "Not a girl" on the girls top and "Not a boy" on the boys short, But at the same time doesn't still show "Boy" on the girls top and " girl" on the boys short. It means under different circumstances, they are neither boys not girls. It could be seen this way; She may not want to be classified as a girl at the same time, she's not a boy either on the other hand, he doesn't want to be classified as a boy at the same time he's not a girl. Hence the uncertainty and societal confusions. I have filled a lot of forms where when it comes to being gender specific, there are a lot of options and some would add ; "Rather not say" for those who don't want to be specific. Cordelia fine said "Cross-gender behaviour is seen as less acceptable in boys than it is in girls: unlike the term ‘tomboy’ there is nothing positive implied by its male counterpart, the ‘sissy’." hence the use of emojis for the guy, most are scared to let the society know about it, hence most don't speak out and therefore are signified here as passive.
