About The Artwork

I found it intriguing to incorporate a vibrant yet artificial green—resembling plastic—into the center of the artwork. It represents a cultivated area, but one covered in "kiwi mesh." My interest in the deliberate and artificial geometrization of the landscape persists. In this piece, my challenge was to capture the cold, wintry light that signals an impending frost in the central region of Chile. Some time ago, I discovered that the sky doesn't necessarily need to be painted blue because the eye will interpret it as blue regardless. Therefore, I stopped painting it blue. The same principle applies to the ground; our brains will always perceive it as such because it is below us, so it can be any color. Given that the earth consists of various shades of red, I tend to use red tones to convey brown and gray. I find these color matches and mismatches amusing. I aim for plausibility in my work, but I don't seek certainty.

Born in Chile (1980), Mara Santibáñez is a visual artist and academic with a distinguished career in both fields. Since 2018, she has focused on contemporary landscape painting, redefining the concept of landscape as a construct influenced by social, cultural, and political dimensions. Through her works, she delves into the intricate web of power relations inherent in these spaces Her paintings defy traditional notions of landscape, portraying scenes that are frequently perceived as soulless, dismembered, or overlooked. Through her artistic practice, she illuminates locations that have been devastated or rendered insignificant, transforming them into vibrant landscapes that enrich the local imaginary.
