This painting was inspired by my connection to the landscape of the rural midwest and my desire to interpret that landscape through a personal lens. Topsoil and iron filings have been mixed with the paint giving the paint greater presence on the canvas. These additions to the painting's surface can be thought of as a part of my process suggesting another level of content, or as an aesthetic device creating texture to be appreciated on a purely visual level. The artist’s hand is strongly present in this very subjective view of the South Dakota landscape. The ellipses are almost perfect very nearly mechanical in their production, the imperfections however, reveal the hand of the artist/creator indicating the possibility of a bridge from a place we all know and recognize to an unknown country beyond the horizon. On completing "Dakota Landscape" I was particularly pleased with the subtlety of the color transitions and the contrast of pastel rose and yellow colors accompanying the aggressive application of oil paint.

Paul was born in Viborg SD in June of 1967. Growing up on a farm in Southeastern SD has given Paul an intimate understanding of rural life and a unique perspective as an artist. Viewers of his work will not only perceive a sense of place but will also experience the complicated and sometimes contradictory feelings many rural residents experience over their lifetimes. The paintings are colorful, emotionally autobiographical and mirror the artist's feeling of connection to the land. Paul lives in the Black Hills of South Dakota with his wife and daughter. He is adjunct faculty at BHSU and when he is not teaching or painting he can be found playing guitar(sometimes singing) at local restaurants, bars, churches, coffee shops, festivals etc....
