About The Artwork

Charles Darwin noticed that Galapagos finches had evolved different beaks on different islands in the group, according to the food source available to them. Here Darwin is depicted with his finches in the style of an old sepia photograph. But is Darwin's gesture aimed at his critics, or at the "smartass" birds, who appear to have evolved a little faster than his theory predicted?

Originally from the united Kingdom I have been a long time resident of Bali, Indonesia. Here I discovered a passion for painting despite having had no formal training. I often think of a painting as a hole or window in a wall leading to another time and place. My task is to lead the viewer there, using only paint on canvas. In that place I have no regard for either the laws of nature or scale, and it is this freedom that I enjoy in painting. My paintings could be described as surreal but also have a realism in terms of detail and often include satire or humor. Inspiration may be something I see that begs to be manipulated, or sometimes is nothing visual at all and could be a well known phrase or event. I see the process of painting as a series of challenges in how best to represent an idea using the tools of light, color and texture. Conveying that idea or emotion to the viewer is both my motivation and satisfaction. I hope my paintings not only amuse the viewer, but also provoke thought, while still being aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
