This all started after my partner and I watched a documentary about the making of Island of Doctor Moreau (the one with Marlon Brando). The film was made by Richard Stanley who is apparently completely insane, in a way that I really appreciated. If I recall, at one point he was fired, but then snuck back onto the set and blew something up? Something like that. Anyways it got me thinking, that was not a good film but man the experience of creating it had to be one of the most surreal experiences you could have as a person involved in that industry. One thing that stood out to me, at least visually, was Marlon Brando who at this point in his life was pretty much the embodiment of eccentricity. He was basically a nutcase, but again in a good way, and ended up becoming friends with the smallest man in the world while filming. If the documentary is to be believed, eventually Brando was literally carrying the guy around. It was kind of like a real life "mini-me" situation. The story behind the experience of making that film inspired me greatly, and I went and busted out a few of my strongest go-to colors and did something figurative as I like to do, but in a really expressionistic way even though I probably don't understand what that actually means. I wanted the white to really jump out because here is this huge, obese guy, and the world's tiniest man, and they're both wearing all white in the jungle. They are so drastically out of place they seem unreal. So I'm not sure what you see, but to me they are kinda just hanging out under a ridiculously giant mushroom. Most like the magic kind, and most likely it has become their only sustenance. I would highly recommend buying this painting, first and foremost, and once you have done that I would also highly recommend watching that documentary. I could look it up and tell you the name, but just search for "documentary doctor moreau richard stanley" and you will definitely find it.

I became an artist at a very young age after discovering it was socially acceptable for artists to own books full of naked people. Over the years I have made pieces for fun, friends, profit, romance, to burn as sacrifices to the art gods, pass time, blend in, trade for beer, tacos, drugs, privileges or favors, while playing video games, socializing, going to sleep, doing homework or chores, on a dare, while driving, sleeping, blindfolded, with the lights out, wearing sunglasses underwater, using paint, garbage, blood, other things... I most often create figurative or expressionist paintings, even though I don't formally know what those words mean, and my process involves blocking out basic shapes and colors, and then coming back across with wave after wave of manic insanity until the details are at a place that I am happy with. Many times I will just be so disgusted with my work that I will paint over it, so most of my finished work has about 5 or 6 other paintings living underneath.
