VIEW IN MY ROOM
"Downtown" was on display at the Salmagundi Club’s 40th Annual Open Exhibition and received the coveted Thomas Moran Memorial Award for Watercolor. The view from Brooklyn to Manhattan as seen between nor’easter #two and #three. In my native Philadelphia, we went downtown to Center City. In New York City, where I have made my home for over 40 years, there isn’t just one downtown—it’s all center, it’s all city—and that includes a large swath of Brooklyn. I am standing in what is frequently called Downtown Brooklyn; that now includes a newly-developed series of parks hugging the waterfront by the Brooklyn Bridge. It affords a wonderful view of Lower Manhattan’s financial district. Brooklynites have always known that they get the best view of this iconic neighborhood, although many of us still see the hole in the sky where the twin towers of the World Trade Center once stood. I have never attempted to paint a cityscape as extensive as this one, and I clearly got into the stripes of some of the buildings. I hoped to maintain the spatial distance between the foreground of Brooklyn shoreline and trees while preserving the monumental buildings in the background. It was a lesson for me in using color to create scale, atmosphere and space, all while editing out everything that wasn’t essential to the composition. This was surprisingly a lot of fun to paint.

Joy Makon is a passionate observer of color and light; she explores the relationships of watercolor paint, heavy paper and contemporary reality. Her paintings are based on observations of daily life through landscapes and seascapes, often with figures incorporated into the composition. Subjects come from neighborhoods in NYC, and from travels domestically and abroad. Makon employs classic drawing and watercolor techniques in her paintings; for example, she uses the white of the paper rather than white paint, to convey the strong sense of light that is so evident in her work. It is her unique approach to subject, composition, point-of-view that makes her work anything but traditional. Joy Makon has a BFA in graphic design and photography from Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, where she studied with John Moore, Stanislaw Zagorski and Joseph Scorsone. Her work has been shown in juried and gallery shows and can be found in private collections throughout the U.S. Makon has been recognized by the Art Directors Club, Society of Publication Designers, Society of Illustrators, for her work as a magazine art director. Joy is a member of artist-run 440 Gallery in Brooklyn. http://440gallery.com She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
