About The Artwork

The intention here was to paint a seascape or memory and contemplation rather than an image of detail and movement. I wanted to make it a subject of calm and sunny relaxation, an idealised memory of a sunny afternoon on a beach with no distractions. As the painting developed I washed over any elements that were showing up as distracting from the mood and so the method was more one of subtraction than addition. It was tempting to add some focus points or drama into the overall scheme as is often the case when the paintbrush or palette knife is in the hand but I resisted the urge and called it finished after a few days.

I have been painting for many decades but have only recently exhibited to a wider public. Previously, exhibitions and sales were at my home and garden studio on Shoreham Beach. Formal artistic education since school started with the Aesthetics course at university and since then continued with lengthy one-to-one contact with artists who have developed specific techniques. The canvases mainly inhabit an area in the interstices between pure abstract and representations of landscapes and seascapes. I aim to create an area in which the viewer can easily develop an individual interpretation of a scene or atmosphere. Hence, my art is more evocative than representational. Important aspects are depth and variety of texture, purity of colour and luminescence. The nearby sea and the ever changing sky above it which are visible from the window have provided a constant inspiration.
