Subject: This painting depicts El Feuente Grande, also known as Fountain of Tears perhaps because you can see small bubbles that slowly rise from the bottom to the surface in the form of tears. The water emerges from the underground aquifer of the El Padul and La Peza mountain ranges. Water from the Fuente was channeled through the Acequia Aynadamar 10km to supply the Albayzín neighborhood of Granada starting in the 11th century. Collection Description: This collection delves into our modern civilization's intricate connection with water, exploring Granada, Andalusia, a city intricately shaped by water. From the earliest Roman interventions on the Mediterranean coast to the refined Moorish advancements in water control infrastructure, the mastery of water emerges as an enduring theme in historical and contemporary urban development and social identity. Water infrastructure stretches hundreds of kilometers into the Andalusian countryside, a vast network of aqueducts, dams, and reservoirs tracing both natural hydrology and millennia of Roman and Moorish engineering. Within the city, the paths of key waterways became the entries to the city and hubs for trade and defense. The fall lines of secondary waterways flowing towards the Darro became water streets, which would define neighborhoods, plazas, and the shape of urban development and community life. In our contemporary era grappling with climate change, this dialogue gains urgency. Rediscovering historical and vernacular methods of coexisting with water aligns with the imperative need for new ideas promoting sustainability and conservation. This exploration of Granada captures pivotal moments where water's role is etched into the city's history, offering profound reflections on the past, a lens for scrutinizing present challenges, and inspiration for shaping a sustainable future.
