About The Artwork

In 1991 I began a series of very large mono-printed finger paintings. After making the original finger painting on glass I would print it on panels of pressed fiber material. I would join all the panels together, and then continue to paint in a manner suggested by the original finger painting. I would basically develop the content by imagining forms in the complexity of the marks, and bringing those forms more to life. I never had any idea what the paintings would be like until I discovered them. I so enjoyed these very large, lengthy puzzles which I always had ongoing in my studio between 1991 and 2009. During this very demanding duration of my fulltime elementary school teaching career, the finger-paintings allowed me to keep my hand at work in the studio, without creating the god awful splashy mesh that most of my previous work demanded, as I no longer had the freedom to work that way. This began in 2003 and was completed by 2005.

I have lived and worked on the Big Island of Hawai'i since 2009. The inspiration provided by that change of location, from the San Francisco Bay Area to Keaʻau, Hawaii, is clearly evident in the work. My Berkeley roots have continued to guide my practice, even as my work now springs from Hawaii.
