The term "limited edition" has various meanings depending upon the artist, publisher, distributor and seller (or reseller). Saatchi Art uses the term "limited edition prints" to denote two dimensional art prints available through a pre-publication license agreement between the artist and Saatchi Art and sold pursuant to an exclusive prints publication arrangement.
This exclusive arrangement with the artist establishes a total maximum number of prints based on a single original high resolution digital image of a specific work of art created by the artist for limited and exclusive reproduction based on different paper type and/or dimension of the print. Certain information about the limited edition print and sale will be provided to buyers in a Certificate of Authenticity which is included with the purchase of each limited edition print through Limited by Saatchi Art. Saatchi Art is selling "limited edition prints" in compliance with the standards of disclosure established by California law regulating the sale of limited edition art prints. The image for any limited edition print may, in certain circumstances, be licensed by the artist for reproduction on other consumer products, such as phone cases, apparel and other home décor accents (but excluding two dimensional art prints).
California law provides for disclosure in writing of information concerning certain fine prints, photographs, and sculptures prior to effecting a sale of them. This law requires disclosure of such matters as the identity of the artist, the artist’s signature, the medium, whether the multiple is a reproduction, the time when the multiple was produced, use of the plate which produced the multiple, and the number of multiples in a "limited edition." If a prospective purchaser so requests, the information shall be transmitted to him or her prior to payment, or the placing of an order for a multiple. If payment is made by a purchaser prior to delivery of the multiple, this information will be supplied at the time of or prior to delivery, in which case the purchaser is entitled to a refund if, for reasons related to the matters contained in such information, he or she returns the multiple in the condition in which it was received, within 30 days of receiving it. In addition, if after payment and delivery, it is ascertained that the information provided is incorrect, the purchaser may be entitled to certain remedies, including a refund upon return of the multiple in the condition in which it was received.
Buyers of limited edition prints are entitled to a Certificate of Authenticity upon request prior to placing a limited edition print order online, or at the time of or prior to delivery of the limited edition print. Every limited edition print sold through Limited by Saatchi Art comes with a Certificate of Authenticity which includes a certification that the "information and statements contained therein are true and correct."
Saatchi Art is the exclusive distributor of limited edition art prints available for sale on Limited by Saatchi Art. In certain circumstances, the artist of a work available as a limited edition art print on Limited by Saatchi Art may license the image of the subject work for reproduction related to the sale of other consumer products, such as phone cases, apparel and other home décor accents (but excluding two dimensional art prints). The manner and consumer goods on which the image is reproduced are at the discretion of the artist, but the artist is precluded from permitting the subject work to be made available for reproduction on two dimensional art prints other than limited edition prints available for purchase on Limited by Saatchi Art.
A limited edition print that recites the number 2/25 means that the buyer is purchasing the second published print in a maximum print edition of 25 total prints (plus any proofs) of a specified size and dimension based upon a high resolution digital image of the artist’s original work of art. The Certificate of Authenticity tells the buyer if more than one edition has been published from the original image. For example, a print numbered 2/25 in a limited edition of 25 could be sold measuring 12" x 24" and another print numbered 2/15 in a limited edition of 15 could be sold measuring 24" x 36". The Certificate of Authenticity in that example would show that the total number is 40 prints (plus any proofs).
France
France-based and internationally spreaded, Benedicte Gelé paints the horses, expressiveness and emotions. Born in 1975 in the Parisian suburb, however, she’s never had a connexion with this animal until she started to ride them at the age of 15. She became a graphic designer without stopping her artistic research. Her curiosity and her desire to improve her skill, pushed her into learning by herself different techniques. She started to paint landscapes with first success in regional exhibitions with some first prizes. In 2004, her job as art director ended brutally as she was pregnant. This unemployment time was undeniably a sign for her to start something else. Gelé became a freelance graphic designer and an artist. "One part of me has always been attracted to horses without knowing why exactly. With the experience now, I would say that because this animal can express itself only with the expressivity of his body and the subtle language of his head, it made me sensitive to his emotions. All this process was unconscious. Now I can add that I realized that all these expressions I put in my horses were also my own inner emotions. Those that I was not aware of, that I hid deep inside me." Horses are the pretext, paint is the means of expression to express her emotions. Benedicte Gelé started to paint horses with a figurative expression as it was very natural for her. Except that she’s refused to keep this style. Inside her, there was much more than just the representation of the animal, something more personal that Gelé hadn’t find out yet. The horse is taken as a body with round shapes, bones, angles that reminds her nude lessons at school. She’s chosen the horse but it could have been a female model as they share common points. Year after year, the line took the central part of her art as a common thread with the powerful black chalk she always kept. The graphic designer in her is never very far away and kept influencing her work. She is also an explorer when it comes to technique and Gelé always tries new mediums to keep a kind of freshness, have infinite possibilities and choice of expression in her work. Her art is rich in texture, contrast and uses complementary color palettes blended together. Her horses became more abstract as well with just the essential to express the movement and the expressivity. A kind of semi-abstract painting where the animal remains in the lines and the emotional in the core of her art.
