About The Artwork

Elephants are extraordinary creatures and they are capable of feeling the same emotions we do and sharing similar bonds with family.Elephants have long been known to rush to the aid of babies and mourn their dead.I wanted to symbolize that bond as a one line art. This is a original Batik painting done on calico fabric and mounted on stretched canvas and protected with top coat of Liquitex varnish.

Monisha Gallage is a contemporary Batik artist based in New Zealand. She was raised in Sri Lanka and was primarily influenced to the world of art by her dad who worked as an artist in Sri Lanka. At her young age she started working as a newspaper artist helping her dad's editorial work for a children's news paper. Then she completed her degree in fashion and lifestyle design in University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. After her graduation she worked for couple of world-renowned brands as a junior designer and then started experimenting on her Batik art which she falling love with while she was studying in university. She had to work really hard, however, for almost 3 years before she started seeing results and now she is regularly commissioned to create batik art for various requirements. Batik is a wax-resist dyeing technique with its own character ,it’s unique and has qualities that the regular air brushed watercolor illustrations doesn't have, yet was just as versatile. Offering something unique and innovative was her choice and she is keen on customer satisfaction.
