About The Artwork

The seven stylised figurative paintings are taken from a collection of life studies that show the unflinching portrayal of the female form in all its disguises - young, old and ordinary. The paintings were originally drawn under an artificial light first using the immediacy of pencil and charcoal on canvas board and later rendered in oil. The palette consists of contrasting colours such as lead white, antique vermillion, Prussian blue, burnt umber and unbleached titanium.

James Cooper is a London based artist born in 1971. He completed a pre-degree in Fine Art at the Kensington and Chelsea College, and a BA (Hons) in Fine Art painting at Hornsey College of Art. After five years of service he left the armed forces, and was the co-owner of the highly acclaimed Windmill restaurant in Fulham. It was here where he had his first studio, and used the venue as a platform to launch his own paintings, as well as curate group and solo exhibitions for other artists. Over the last twenty years James Cooper’s painting processes have continued to evolve and mature. His sources of inspiration remain both diverse and eclectic. The latest collection of work provides an exciting opportunity to explore this development through images of urban scenes. He uses traditional oil painting techniques in a modern style that allows him to express his distinctive perspective on contemporary life in an exciting and unusual manner. Work is commissioned in addition to being held in institutional, private, and corporate collections both in the UK and worldwide, and has been displayed in numerous exhibitions. Cooper has subsequently lived and painted in New York, Cuba, Ireland, and India in addition to various other countries.
