Over the past few years Derek has worked predominantly in monochrome. In effect removing all colour, working in white, with occasional tones of grey and pure black. More recently he has reintroduced colour. Expressionistic yet controlled, muslin is thrown repeatedly and teased until the ethos of the piece is revealed. Using unique reliefs of muslin to create form, revealing eclectic, emotional expression through contorts of paint soaked fabric. Movement is a key factor in his practice, an abstraction of fluid forms which reflect an interest in the human condition. Elements of soulful musicality and dance are present in the work which explores the philosophy of poetry of the performer themselves. The canvas is rich in texture with minimalistic, monochromatic figures which are delicate and sensual, the process of making mirroring the act of movement which it suggests.
