#findme (2018) - Mixed media on found paper Every year as much as 2 million people - more than half the population of greater Cape Town - are subjected to all forms of modern slavery. Almost 25% of these people are from Africa. A set of found printed maps, retrieved from a refuse bin, begged the question about what has changed so that these maps were no longer useful - discarded as if there was nothing there to find, used and made redundant. The fragile nature of the paper, like the fragile human frame, is rich with potential. The names of the emblematic persons becomes something worthy to find: love, grace, peace. There is true value to be found in the representative individuals symbolized here, yet their fleeting images becomes a mere impression of a loved one... This series of 12 illustrative portraiture works on recycled paper maps, was created to emphasize the silent cry for help from individuals who face the harsh consequences of human trafficking today. Their cry is an appeal for help, for action, to stop the perpetrators, to save the victims. Virtually inaudible, the desperate plea goes up, “Find me!”

"Creativity takes courage." ~ Henri Matisse David Brave is a Nom du Brasse for artist Jandré Venter, who grew up with a father as an art educator. He particularly admired his dad's courage in approaching the canvas without hesitation. The artist identifies with the biblical David's naivity, but never considered himself a warrior. Even this shepherd boy killed lions & bears while camping out in the wilderness, all the time practising his skills. A successful fundraiser art exhibition was another stepping stone. An art exhibition by three generations of Venters was a probable first of it's kind. The greater objective was to learn more about art production and how to get into fulfilling this vision more progressively. "Eventually I am becoming David. I am extending my horizons, I am learning to breath again, to step out of obscurity and perhaps you may be inspired to do the same. I truly believe that we we're made in the image of the Creator. And therefor, each and everyone on earth, by default, has the capacity for phenomenal creativity. So why do people hesitate, fail to step out? David Brave is a simple, ever present reminder to myself, and hopefully to others, that success favours the courageous."
