About The Artwork

The name of this, Fourth of July 1978, is a bit tongue-in-cheek. I live just north of San Francisco and since 1974, most of my summers have been spent here. Summer often means chill and fog on this part of the coast but every year the faithful trek to the bay for a fireworks display. Even as a city resident, I would travel over the Golden Gate Bridge and into Marin, thinking it would provide a better vantage point. More times than not, instead of the fantastic display hoped for, there is a lovely and impenetrable blanket of fog over the bay. Oils and cold wax give me the ability to play with texture and give my work a visual ‘tactile’ quality. When ‘building’ a piece I often times will block out areas from receiving color. A piece may have several layers that each can play a part as I will scrape back dried paint or pull still wet paint out to create an interplay between the layers of an application. The surface of this piece is a mixture of matt areas with texture and smooth areas. Oil and cold wax on cradled wood panel.

A modern American artist, Georgia Gibbs’ colorful abstracts are strongly inspired by the landscape and inland coastal area of California. Her works can be monochromatic and still with the weight of dense fog or colorful and alive like a hot summer afternoon. The viewer is teased by a sense of the familiar and responds to an emotional nuance, always present in the base notes. Recently she has embraced an additional medium. Using image captures of her garden and the natural world close at hand she has begun to compose eco-portraits. This developing series shows a world undressed, yet not unadorned and invites the viewer to into an intimate relationship with the world underfoot. Appointed Fairfax, California AIR (Artist in Residence) 2018-2020
