About The Artwork

I continue to find cultivation, land usage, and the geometric organization of the landscape fascinating. However, this time, I wanted to compose directly from the scene rather than relying on straight lines as I did in previous works. The challenge was to explore the same theme but with a less organized approach—a more abstract, gestural style. I longed for the sound of the brush strokes ("clap clap clap"). I appreciate what remains, painted with minimal energy, during distracted moments. Additionally, I've noticed a clear influence of Japanese art on my work, likely due to my daughter's avid interest in Japanese culture. I welcome this influence wholeheartedly.

Born in Chile (1980), Mara Santibáñez is a visual artist and academic with a distinguished career in both fields. Since 2018, she has focused on contemporary landscape painting, redefining the concept of landscape as a construct influenced by social, cultural, and political dimensions. Through her works, she delves into the intricate web of power relations inherent in these spaces Her paintings defy traditional notions of landscape, portraying scenes that are frequently perceived as soulless, dismembered, or overlooked. Through her artistic practice, she illuminates locations that have been devastated or rendered insignificant, transforming them into vibrant landscapes that enrich the local imaginary.
