ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This painting depicts my uncle Garry during our group hike on one of our stops on the way to Cape Coast in Ghana circa 2019. The spirit of nature is something special, carrying so much wisdom and I felt it was important to express that in this piece by placing a sculpture I recently created out of found objects, consisting mainly of natural elements from outside. Towards the end of the painting process I had an intuitive feeling to include the sculpture and after thinking about my lineage deeper and my visit to the Maroon village where my great-grandmother Nana came from, I view this work in a much different light.
