About The Artwork

I have a very strong interest and concern for the state of nature and what humans have done to her - and thereby ourselves. While copying at the National Gallery I started to contemplate how I could perhaps utilize or combine my interest and appreciation of traditional painting with this highly urgent contemporary concern. I've been following the plights of the Vaquita porpoise and the Pangolin for the last few years. With the Vaquita numbers down to single digits my heart has just been breaking and I wanted to honor the species with a plea to humans to change their ways. The portrait of a noble woman by Luini served as a suitable vehicle, I felt, to speak across the ages to us - to hold the fragile Vaquita, and to unabashedly adorn herself with the humble and ancient Pangolin - to ask us today if their lives are as precious to us as our own. She is like a goddess holding these utterly vulnerable, yet sacred creatures up to us to examine, as we examine our own lives and motives. I'm of the firm opinion that if we allow them to die, we are setting the stage for our own demise. I'm also confident that the majority of us have the capacity to learn quickly from our collective mistakes, and to turn the ship of life to an enlightened future that will ensure and provide a healthy and abundant biosphere for its own sake and that of future human generations. Stopping, looking, and listening is a good first step.
