“I’m interested in the evocative power of color and space. I want the viewer to have an emotional reaction to each painting. I want to create powerful images that encourage the viewer to see their world in a new way- paying attention to the energy, form and structure around us.” Whether he is using a brush, palette knife or his hands, the vibrancy and feeling of flowers jump off the canvas in artist David Griffith’s still life work. Thick oils loosely applied in a frenzy of movement evoke the emotions of Spring- happiness, renewal and joy. Beginning his visual career as a photographer, David’s work increasing veered toward the artistic. In 2000, David held an exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. Entitled Carnival, the work represented the bold colours and movement of Caribbean carnivals. David’s work in oils is a natural extension of this work. Enamored by the spontaneity of carnival, David sought to capture other subjects with rhythm, movement and strong colour. Loose brush strokes applied in an expressionist manner helps to capture the essence of his floral subjects. David’s work is not a literal representation but a spiritual one; they startle the eye and help us create new perspectives of everyday objects.
