About The Artwork

This painting is part of series inspired from a long summer spent in the South of France in 2020; Saint Tropez, Nice, Cap Ferret and Cannes. It was dreamy, hot and intriguing as the differences in the New modern day France mixing with post traditional Catholic France. Using the Cross symbol is evocative as it is very loaded however this Cross is faded at the edges and in parts hardly there. The canvas is hand stitched with a grid sewn with strong cotton to give the work structure. There are many layers of patterns, paint and gold leaf to pronounce the faded glory of historic France. It can be hung 4 different ways.

My ART practice is a culmination of a great interest in grids, the sublime and repetition. There is always an ethereal element to the paintings, usually with a topographical view point to see the big picture perspective. Nothing is pre-planned, instead an instinctual grid is hand sewn directly Into the canvas to form an idea of a landscape. Horizontal lines are favoured-though I do use verticals mostly to pronounce the horizontal! Repeat patterns create a dreamscape for my imagination to explore. From then it is a long process of finding what I want to SEE. My paintings take many years to complete - atfer living with them, completely changing by painting over or often to just stop looking at them. Then the rediscovering of the parts that work, that’s the exciting exploratory part of creativity that I always trust will come….….
