Gondalier Print

Moonlight rising over the ridge casting interesting iridescent shadows has a mysterious sense of musical or romantic interlude, for me, and for this reason, moonlit evenings have become a continual study for painting. Suddenly, some of those flat shapes of daylight take on new dimension. Once I had begun to deepen shadows my palette has become little more somber, a little more reflective and the color becomes muted. This might be an innovation for me, or it just fell naturally into a different subject of interest. But one of the things that I continue to do is to try to make the surface more interesting by introducing interference colors and experiment with watercolor sticks that allow for an element of drawing as the gondolier was drawn in this way. The current of a nearby river can be swift but drop to low levels at the end of summer and I happened to see a flat boat with a man and a pole gliding through the shallows one early September day. In this work I thought a gondolier magical and on reflection, the boatman I saw that warm autumn day had his own graceful magic.
