About The Artwork

This is a painting on a sheet of textured polypropylene I made while at an artists' residency called In/Certitude in a little town called Cincșor in Transylvania, Romania. I was recently talking to someone about the collection of work I made while I was on this residency, in a rural environment surrounded by nature with cows and dogs wandering up and down the street and they commented that it has something of a surprising urban flavor to it. My apartment and studio back home are both in a downtown area and this got me thinking about how sometimes you have to get out of a place in order to really see it. I made this painting on a picnic table under a trellis of grapevines laden with ripe perfectly spherical green grapes with a flavor I'd never quite experienced before, like a sweeter version of our sour American green grapes with a hint of lychee. The surface of the painting is textured polypropylene, meaning it is a plastic paper treated to give it a bit of a tooth such that paint will stick to it, though it feels quite smooth to the touch, like the finest grit sandpaper. This plastic paper is impermeable to liquid so it does not warp when it gets wet, and it is quite durable so you don't have to hold back with the wild gestures when you're using it. I started the composition by doodling with a sharpie marker, then with yellow and magenta enamel based paint markers. The yellow marker is great because the pigment has a way of eating up through subsequent layers, which are all made up of acrylic paints. The top layer is titanium white fluid acrylic which I've drizzled on as if it were decorative white chocolate criss crossing the top of a fancy cake. When that white paint is a little bit dry but still mostly wet I went at it with a silicone spatula type tool and spread it around in places, but left the criss cross drizzled in others. The white picks up the black underneath it and they join together to form a spectrum of greys. That yellow underneath eats through and adds flavor to the final composition.
