About The Artwork

My intention with this work is to depict the decision to take charge of ones destiny despite all obstacles and adversity that life throws at us. A pregnant lady travels alone; the cloudy weather, broken back window; passport in hand, eyes shut, taking more luggage than can be managed, flawless make up and look ; everything creating a tension between security and uncertainty.

When I think about my work, I find it difficult to define, but when I look back at all I have produced over the years, I can see that there is a fascination for human beings and a search for meaning in everyday life. I attribute this fascination to my childhood. I was eager to know what happens after we die and wondered about things that exist but for some reason we cannot see. This inspired my aunt to write a play for children called ‘El Muerto Todito’ (The Whole Death) which won first prize at the National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico. Her main character was called ‘Musi’ and was based on my curiosity about life after death. Being such a dreamer, it’s curious that I grew up to be a figurative painter and have such a strong focus on realism. However, my abstract work explores the mystery of the human mind with all our fears, questions, qualities and imperfections. I use abstract work as a way to map out emotions and conflicts. In that sense, human beings are at the centre of all my work.
