Harlequin Print

This is a painting that combines both abstract and figurative elements, and tries to bring these near opposites together in a whole. Harlequins traditionally wore a chequered costume, and could be viewed as a kind of romantic hero. I wanted to add the suggestion of his costume as an abstract sign. The line of the body is very controlled, but the sign of the costume is a glaze hovering on the surface. It is not a literal study of a harlequin in a costume, just the idea of one. They appear as a part of the Commedia dell'arte. They have a history in art, with artists such as Cezanne or Picasso famously painting them. Witty, agile and nimble, and generally maker of mischief, a harlequin is the light-hearted archetypal jester and outsider.
