About The Artwork

I am INSPIRED by life forms of all types past and present and combinations thereof. Taken as a whole, I have painted a Cambrian Explosion of my own illustrating the underlying harmony between humanity and nature that informs all of my work. Or maybe it ‘s really just another day at the beach, where all sorts of happy beings are enjoying nature and helping each other stay dry by getting out from under the high tide. I wonder if this was what the sea creatures were thinking 500 million years ago when they contemplated climbing onto the beach-to go higher and to stay dry! I hope VIEWERS enjoy the whimsical combination jellyfish/woman; the mermaids tending their eggs in the makeshift shell/carriage; perhaps they will notice that one of the eggs holds a human embryo. I hope they are refreshed by the beautiful blues and movement of the incoming high tide, and enchanted by the stork, pelican beach bum, the yin yang fish forming the sun and all the other life forms, real or imagined by me. TECHNICAL MATTERS: I worked this piece with acrylic paint kept wet with retardant so I could draw the figures loosely but with detail. It occurred to me that the way the forms were created by me in this painting was similar to the way life forms came about during evolution. Some were better than others and just as in real life evolution , I kept the better painted forms and eliminated the unsuccessful ones. High tide has gallery wrapped painted edges and is ready to hang.

As a painter, I am an explorer, uncovering, recording and rearranging the beauty of the natural world, as well as the beauty of human beings. I select and distill the very essence of my subject, harmony between nature and humanity, sometimes combining the two. This symbiosis makes the finished work even more beautiful than either of its constituents alone. When you first visit my fantasy world, you will notice a lot of extraordinary things going on in my paintings. For instance, I might substitute a bird for a hat, or a butterfly for a bowtie. These unusual substitutions function as symbols and provide subtle clues and playful suggestions about my work. The shapes of birds and hats, or butterflies and bowties, are so similar that viewers never even question the replacements. I pick the substitutes because they fit graphically and visually. But it is more than that. We as humans fit with nature. We fit together so well, in fact, that I am able to paint a natural object–a butterfly–in place of the bowtie–and viewers can see this as truth. My world will refresh you with its vibrant colors, textures, and interchangeable shapes as you immerse yourself in the integration of nature and humanity. You will be at peace with yourself and at one with nature. You will experience nature in a totally new way and see beauty in places where you never before thought to look.
