This is a stylised portrait based on an old photo where Hilma af Klint is sitting in her studio. It's easy to find this photo online and if you wish to see the original, you will recognize it by her posture, leaning to her hand and having a direct gaze to the camera. I love her energy in that picture, there's nothing apologetic about her, she is owning her space completely. I love her sureness about who she is, and it really inspired me while I was painting. She simply knows, full stop. My painting's feel is more subtle, pensive, the attention is more inwards. I wanted to dwell in the mysterious, subtle, light and dreamy, in the space behind her outer expression. I draw around 10 pencil drawings before I moved on painting Hilma. While I worked on this, I read the history of her and imagined how it was to paint conventional portraits by day, and create huge, colourful, chaneled paintings by night. Her story is so incredible, and so is her art! This is for someone loving the subtle romantic tones of this painting, loving the story of a woman who lived her wildest dreams in the privacy of her own atelier. I wish this piece will deliver the same epiphany to you that it did to me: you don't have to show the world what you're doing, do it if it makes you happy. The painting is created on a smooth, nice wooden board that is ready to hang. I also wanted to add a glossy varnish on top, to bring out the colours and lace like textures of the brush. Hope this piece will inspire you for years to come! With love, Maria
