VIEW IN MY ROOM
Painting of mother and child. Son in the lower left sits on his mother’s knee and laughs. The mother gazes at a teal orb, reaching out to touch it. On the right, larger mother holds her toddler son as he kisses her cheek. All figures have golden halos surrounding their heads. Swirling pinks, purples, and scattered blue bubbles create a pulsing background. This painting is part of a series of life-size oil paintings that celebrate parents who are artists. These powerful and complex human beings are raising children, fighting for justice, working to pay the bills, and pursuing their own creativity — every day. They deserve to be celebrated and commemorated for their work, their love, their passion, their existence. 50% of the sales proceeds from any prints or the original will go to the model, Heraa Khan. Heraa Khan is a contemporary visual artist and art instructor from Lahore, Pakistan. After being awarded a scholarship, Khan completed her Bachelors in Fine arts at National College of Arts (NCA) in 2012, specializing in miniature painting. She has had several solo exhibitions and has participated in significant group shows, nationally and internationally. Some selected shows include; You Selfish Dreamer, Rossi and Rossi, London, UK; Solo Show by Heraa Khan, Bone Black Gallery, Texas, USA; Earth Impermanence, Union Arts Center, NY, USA; Polar Self Portraits, Boz'Art en Baz'art Art All That Glisters Is Not Gold, Chawkandi Gallery, Lahore, Pakistan. She received the Ruth Katzman scholarship at the Art Student's League Residency at Vyt, NY, USA in 2016, where she also taught a workshop on the traditional miniature painting. She has taught a course titled ‘Miniature painting and beyond’ at the International Summer Academy, Salzburg, Austria. Her work is published in the book ‘Three Contemporary Artists’, a book on the life and work of the artist Heraa Khan and renowned poets, Yasmin Hameed and Rizwan Akhtar. Khan’s work is an attempt to transform the traditional technique of Indo-Persian miniature painting into a contemporary form. Her traditional practice is a sustainable practice and involves her making her own kalam ( paint brush) from squirrel hair, hair own paints from natural pigments and her own paper called wasli.
