About The Artwork

A painting responding to the question of' the legacies of Biafra' It is an oil painting on canvas measuring 100cm X100cm. Hunger was used as a weapon of war, a brain child of Britain as a way of stopping the secession from Nigeria during the Nigeria/Biafra civil war. This situation led to malnutrition, children were orphaned and developed kwashiorkor. I gridded the image while using uli symbols to occupy the spaces making up the painting. The plethora of stories emerging from the experiences of the war informed the placement of the symbols. It is like a puzzle permanently fixed or uncut although that was not the initial intention. Oil paint was used as a medium because of its longevity, the image stays with you, haunting and although the grid tends to take away from the potency of this picture, the symbols add a bit of mystique to the painting.
