About The Artwork

This image was my first post on social media as Wonky Star Studios shortly after the 2021 New Year. It’s a self-portrait painted on men's briefs. It is old, but it managed to accurately represent my feelings about the transition from 2020 to 2021; for me, the world seemed to be in continual crisis. The work was created during a “dry” period when I had a great deal of personal, financial, and family stress. I knew there was “light” somewhere in my future, represented by the bright window element, but at the time I felt emotionally loaded down. I presented myself in an outline, a shell of myself. It is a self-portrait; a theme that can’t help but come up in almost every painter’s body of work. Almost 20 years later I will finish another version of the same image called “I KNOW” reflecting a different form of personal angst. The effort to express my innermost self in both works must have been successful in releasing the negatively I was experiencing at the time. I say that because when I view the works now, I feel mostly relief with a small amount of humor. Greg Hausler was born in New York but raised in Kansas where he graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting. During his time at college, he developed his signature technique of using articles of clothing and other textiles instead of linen canvas for his mixed-media abstract paintings. His non-traditional use of painting media is influenced by Marcel Duchamp and street artists while his painting technique draws inspiration from Jackson Pollock and Claude Monet resulting in a style of work that is uniquely his own.
