ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In a Moment - 2023 (100 x 50cm) is part of an evolving collection entitled, Moments. Throughout the development of this collection, I have subconsciously been drawn back to the monochromatic, leaving out the staging of the figures, enjoying its simplicity, and allowing the figures to stand alone and speak for themselves. Also, I feel this might enable the viewer to attach their own stories and discover their own Moments within the painting. Movement remains a key factor within this work. The piece explores how movement can manifest within the still image, even though the figurative form appears constrained in a moment in time. Elements of soulful musicality and dance remain present, exploring the philosophy of the performer whilst reflecting upon human vulnerability. The monochromatic canvas's rich texture employs muslin fabric and layers of yellow acrylic paints.

Derek Dickinson

Derek Dickinson (b.1960) originates from south west England. In 1983 he relocated to London and worked as a designer and stylist for film, photography, television, video and performance, as an assistant director on music videos, in artist management and PR, predominantly associated with the music industry. After returning to the South West Derek completed his BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Plymouth University in 2010, in 2022 he achieved a Masters Degree in Contemporary Art Practice. He has exhibited work in numerous solo and collaborative shows including the Royal Academy London, Berlin and south west England. He has works in permanent collections in the USA, Canada, South Korea, Hong Kong, India, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom. Derek resides in a remote farm cottage on the Duchy of Cornwall Estate.
