About The Artwork

20% of the profits made from this piece of artwork will be donated to The David Shepherd Foundation for the preservation of endangered species in Kenya. 10% goes to the Rendille Tribe in Northern Kenya. Introducing the flagship of her latest series of artwork titled "Cradle of Humanity" Clare Anne Littleton (whose artwork is signed as CAL) aims to motivate others to protect the true wonder and beauty of the natural world. "I believe the future of our planet lies in indigenous ways of living on Earth, this is because since the Cradle of Humanity indigenous people have mastered the art of living on earth without destroying it. Humanity needs to learn these lessons if we want our grandchildren to have a future." Littleton's work is inspired by an anthropological perspective and a lifetime of boundless travels, however, now during the pandemic lockdown she reflects back in time to her childhood growing up on the Masai Mara Kenya, East Africa during the 1960's Indigenous Guardian's is finely painted with exquisite detail in oils on museum 45mm Aluminium Stretched Claessens 13 Very Fine Linen Canvas : 325gsm. Handcrafted beadwork by Clare Littleton including Japanese Toho beads/ mother of pearl / ammonite / fossil coral / obsidian) in incorporated into the work. This painting is sold ready to hang. Rendille women from northern Kenya have long adapted to unpredictable, adverse conditions, however, a growing concern is whether they can adapt to prolonged periods of ever increasing drought due to climate change. These unforgiving lands are also home to the Grevy's Zebra and Plains Zebra all distinguished by their unique stripes, which are as distinctive as human fingerprints. Zebra mothers have to make long and more frequent journeys to drink, resulting in high foal mortality, which is one of the major threats to the survival of the species.

Creating art is visual intimacy for me, it's like tasting the world with my eyes. Having spent my childhood growing up in Kenya East Africa, I am in awe of the beauty in nature and the colourful diversity of culture and my aim is to inspire others through my art to appreciate the natural world, and so be motivated to join those campaigning to protect it. I believe that admiration and respect for nature is inherent in each and every one of us, but gets buried under a mountain of consumer-orientated lifestyles. I am mostly self-taught, and the medium of my choice is mostly oils on canvas and copper. Through studying various painting techniques handed down through history, I admire the layered Flemish technique of the old masters as well as the use of shadows and lights in chiaroscuro used to achieve the illusion of a 3D world. When I paint, I always keep this in mind with the power of suggestion of sensuality, serenity and mystery. I lived with the Bedouin in the village of Sayhun adjacent to the caves of Petra, Jordan, riding on my camel each day to paint. Battling with the dust, chatting to passers-by and friends about the meaning of life. Being an artist as well as working in the field as an anthropologist is an on-going process of learning, sharing knowledge and wisdom and growing as an individual. As each layer after layer emerges on the canvas so the journey unfolds in real life. I hope that my audience are inspired and enjoy viewing as much as I have loved to create.
