Janis Joplin born January 19, 1943 in Port Arthur, Texas and died October 4, 1970 in Los Angeles is an American singer. Nicknamed the " Cosmic Mama " or " Pearl ", she first distinguished herself, at the end of the 1960's, as singer of the psychedelic acid rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company and, later, as solo artist with her backing bands, The Kozmic Blues Band and The Full Tilt Boogie Band. Janis Joplin makes a lasting impression with her vocal performances and stage presence, "electric" for her fans. At the peak of her career, she is "the queen of psychedelic soul" and "Pearl" to her friends. She has also been an arranger, painter, dancer and musician. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Janis Joplin forty-sixth on its list of the 100 greatest artists of all time and twenty-eighth among the 100 greatest singers of all time.
