About The Artwork

This oil painting illustrates a popular nautical tradition (dating back to 1666) in the South of France. It has its rules, its own vocabulary, its rites and its music. In this very spectacular sport the jousters are perched on a platform located three meters above the water( the 'tintaine') and try to make their opponent fall with the help of a wooden spear aimed at the opponent's shield. On each rowing boats you also find oarsmen and musicians playing a sort of oboe. They are all dressed in white. In the background you can see Sète town center and Saint-Clair mount. This work was painted on a linen canvas in successive glazes (thin layers of paint added on top of each other) to give it depth and luminosity. Several sketches and two watercolors made in-situ were used as studies to realise it. It is sold with a nice discreet frame (see additional photo), ready to hang. Dimensions without the frame : 73x60
