About The Artwork

This is an abstract geometric painting on canvas featuring squares and circles and the primary focus. The unique texture within the acrylic paint on canvas is created through scratching, sanding and etching into the several layers that constitute the geometric composition. The painting reflects a sense of dark playfulness, mischievousness and rebellion which is an emotional response to a period of time within my life. Traditional gaming and gambling culture has been a strong influence to the emotional expression and context of this piece. There is a strong inspiration that comes from playing cards, specifically the 'joker' card due to its somewhat happy go lucky, and master of none attitude. The inspiration of playing cards and connotations to gambling shine through in the checkerboard motif at the base of the painting, and the bold use of colours that are present in traditional playing cards - red, yellow black and white paint. The unpredictable placement of the circles within the clear gird, reflects a sense of illusiveness and mistrust. White the washed out, frail colour blocks hint at a fragility at the core. As in all of my work, my prime inspiration comes from observations of our surrounding environment which is expressed in the earthy tones of the colours used within this painting.

Sabrina Brouwers is a truly international artist - half-German, half-Italian, and now living and working in South London. Working mainly with abstract paintings in acrylic, her style has been strongly influenced by her nomadic upbringing and her fascination with design principles. Her paintings are largely monochrome and feature geometric shapes that repeat over a grid system, all plotted with a mathematical precision. She states that the unnaturally rigid grid is a mirror to our urban landscapes, while circles are introduced to juxtapose with and challenge this sense of order. Sabrina has an interesting background, having grown up between different countries before studying a bachelors in fine art at Falmouth University in 2019. She has since developed her style of geometric abstract painting, studying a postgraduate diploma in graphic design at the University of Art in London. Sabrina now works as both an artist and a graphic designer, and the influence of these two differing disciplines is clear to see throughout her paintings.
