About The Artwork

Being stuck indoors during the coronavirus, I turned to still life subjects, particularly kitchen and food images. This painting, "Knife with Sliced Oranges" reflects my wish for some brightness on a drab indoor day. For some reason, I have not painted oranges before, but on this day, the bright color felt like bringing sunlight inside. My paintings have in the past been either highly formal and geometric aiming for a static calm, or chaotic and full of energy aiming for the paradox of frozen movement. This painting combines the two in the random pile of fruit and the regular rectangles of the tiles. I'm hoping captures both, as a fulcrum between a night of dreams and the orderly habits of waking life.

What gives me joy in the world is experiencing still moments in the process of unfolding, whether a hillside that kneads its earth in geologic time or an insect perched, its arrival and departing flight reverberating in the frozen moment. My small work tends toward the figurative and my larger works the abstract. In everything, I need to see the arc of change, not as a photo would capture a bird in flight but the way we experience the ephemeral now that is never really there by the time we notice it.
