After seeing all of the horrors of the ongoing war in Ukraine, I felt I really needed to make something that captured the devastation, bloodshed and resistance of the defenders and, conversely, the greed, desperation and folly of the attackers. What resulted from these ideas was a fairly grotesque painting, but nevertheless a work where its imagery is more than appropriate for the subject matter. I was inspired a lot about Goya's "disasters of war" and his war paintings and how they made me feel over 200 years after their creation, which made me realise how powerful a subject matter conflict can be. I'm hoping my work has a similar impact for future generations. I tried to combine German expressionism with my own developing skills to create my own style that emphasises the madness and death of the situation. In terms of what I want the viewer to feel/think, I think it's only fair they feel some of what the Ukrainians are feeling at the moment. Painting isn't framed and doesn't come with hanging materials but is painted with detail and with good quality paints.
