I have had many opportunities to visit various countries across the world with my spouse who was in senior leadership position in my country’s navy. I also had opportunities to interact with local communities in rural areas. I observed the trials and tribulations faced by many women in a misogynist society. Their sense of helplessness touched a chord in me and has influenced the subject of my paintings. This painting reflects one such woman. The red background reflects the violence inflicted on her, and her black attire indicates sorrow and despair. I think the viewers will be similarly touched by her plight. The medium I have used in this painting is a combination of charcoal and oil.

I was born in India but later after my husband retired from the Navy as an admiral, we were posted in Canada as Indian Ambassador. After visiting all over the world met various artists and saw many exhibitions. As an artist I found passion in painting and have explored various mediums, starting with computer-based art and eventually transitioning to oil painting. I was inspired by a good friend Anjolie Ela Menon who is a world-famous Artist. She encouraged me and under her, I learned a lot about the finer points of painting. My preferred genres of realism and figurative art allow me to bring an unique perspective and views on the world to life through artwork. I try to express my thoughts, emotions, and observations through my artistic creations. Art has the power to convey messages, evoke emotions, and spark conversations. Through art, I am able to communicate my views on the ever-changing world around us, both it's beauty and it's faults. My journey through as a naval spouse, my responsibilities towards the naval community, and later as my spouse rose in rank, I got deeply involved with a large community residing in rural India and their traditional arts. This contributed immensely to my growth as an artist. Now I am settled in the USA and enjoying my painting, for me, it is a meditation and gives me a lot of tranquility.
